EVERY CATECHUMEN SHOULD SEE THIS: An ACTUAL Priest responding to self-proclaimed YouTube Theologians.

 

For some time I have been become increasingly discontented with the the proliferation of YouTube internet theologian content creators in all camps: Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant.   In the recent few years  there has been an explosion of videos and new faces who have become part of what has now become the world of internet orthodoxy, or "inter-doxy" as many have jibbed.   I have maintained the perspective that there is a danger to self-proclaimed internet theological hobbyists taking the teaching responsibilities upon themselves due to lack of professional training and credentials, or maybe no blessing by a hierarch, or perhaps even simply no substantial experience actually living as an Orthodox Christian since their conversions virtually last week. Granted, their zeal is notable, and they can quote the "good stuff" that makes the orthodox points, but time and time again their pseudo intellectualism is dwarfed by their absolute ignorance of pastoral theology.  

Repeating correct orthodox facts does not grant one the grace to actually touch someone's soul, ESPECIALLY if they are wounded.   How often I see blundering that it cannot be called anything but spiritual abuse.  This is what is often taking place in the comments sections below the videos as all the self righteous micro-pontificate to anyone who will engage them and unmoderated discussions devolve into utter chaos.  

The absolute worst that I saw was a  posting from a new convert who felt the need to post an unsolicited misquote from St. Basil about dead unbaptized babies going to hell. A distraught grandmother wrote in the comments how her baby granddaughter died before baptism and she was beside herself with grief and now DREAD that that infant is in hell, and that the family is terrified.   I actually wrote to the woman privately and did my best to console and comfort her and her family in the midst of their tragedy.  Thanks internet theological hobbyists!  No one goes to bed at night crying over the Filioque controversy, but people do wrestle with matters of their salvation over the guilt of their past sins, or abuse, tragedy, or the wounds in their souls from incalculable reasons. 

How about leaving the matters of the soul to the Priests ordained for this very ministry.  

Religious groups often use slogans, polemics, or rallying cries to assert their theological positions, condemn opposing views, or emphasize doctrinal purity. Here’s a list of slogans or accusations commonly hurled between different religious factions especially on line.  Let's avoid at all costs use of the inflammatory statements in our discourse:

• "The Canons say..." (Often used to justify positions based on Church law)
• "True Orthodox!" (Used by Old Calendarists and schismatics to claim legitimacy)

• "Latinization!" (Accusation that an Eastern Church is adopting Roman Catholic practices)

Just stop it... worry about your own salvation.  Obviously, I wouldn't be Orthodox if I wasn't convinced of the Orthodox position, but smashing someone over the head with it doesn't engender a healthy conversation, and certainly not a conversion.    Here is what we should be saying:  Come and See...
